Virtual panel discussion with Medela and The Wellbeing Foundation Africa shines light on breastfeeding barriers in high-risk countries

Aligned with the Medela Cares commitment to the UN’s Every Woman Every Child initiative, Medela introduced its partnership with The Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA) with a panel discussion on August 7. Medela hosted a virtual panel discussion with Her Excellency Toyin Saraki, founder of the WBFA, Professor Diane Spatz, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN and WBFA midwife Rita Momoh. This inaugural meeting was moderated by Tolu Adeleke, founder of Tolu The Midwife Healthcare Solutions and CEO of Maternity Hub (Nigeria).

The discussion took place during World Breastfeeding Week, and panellists discussed the barriers to breastfeeding that many moms in high-risk countries face. As a vested supporter of the UN’s Every Woman Every Child initiative, Medela has been working to improve outcomes in the NICU around the world. Over the past 6 years, Medela developed a dedicated lactation quality improvement program that has been proven out in numerous countries such as India, Russia, Japan, Portugal, China, and which we bring now to Nigeria through this partnership.

This exciting partnership between Medela and The Wellbeing Foundation Africa will help improve the support offered to new mothers in Nigeria by delivering this NICU-specific education and training on the value of human milk and how to build sufficient milk supply for long-term breastfeeding.
