The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of human milk and breastfeeding in the NICU

Thursday, 2 July 2020

This one-hour webinar will present the evolving impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic on the practices of human milk use and breastfeeding in the NICU. The session will focus on the possible role of regional, national and international guidelines for COVID-19 on the complex and integrated support for human milk and breastfeeding. The speaker will present the current science regarding COVID-19 and how it has shaped our NICU environment and practices to alter human milk provision. With the crisis continuing, advocacy for protecting and supporting the fundamental elements around human milk use and breastfeeding in the NICU will be essential.

Objectives:

  • Describe the support elements for the provision of human milk and breastfeeding in the NICU
  • Outline the basic known facts of COVID-19 as it relates to developing guidelines around human milk and   breastfeeding in the NICU
  • Define the key ways that we may be able to advocate for mothers to safely produce enough milk and breastfeed their babies in the NICU

Presenter

Jae KimMD, PhD

Prof. Jae Kim, MD, PhD, is a faculty member and the Director of the Division of Neonatology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center within the UC Department of Pediatrics. His special areas of clinical and research interests include neonatal nutrition, neonatal bowel injury, bedside ultrasound and resuscitation. He leads a team of healthcare professionals who work together in the 14 different NICUs and new-born sites across the Cincinnati area to provide exceptional new-born care. His team engages in fetal care before birth alongside obstetrical colleagues and takes care of infants during the time of birth and after birth when problems arise. This care is coupled with important bridges to scientific discovery in the areas of laboratory research, clinical research, quality improvement and follow-up care for the best long-term health outcomes.

He assisted in the formation of two donor banks for human breast milk – one in Toronto, Canada, and the other in San Diego, California, where he practiced for over a decade. These breast milk banks are among his most significant accomplishments.
